Video: GAF HydroStop® PremiumCoat® Roof System Installation

Roof coatings are cost-effective solutions that help extend a commercial roof’s service life. Roofing manufacturer GAF offers a complete roof coating solution with the HydroStop® PremiumCoat® Roof System. In the following video, local roofers Empire Contractors LLC shares an overview of its installation process.

What Is the HydroStop PremiumCoat Roof System Used For?

The HydroStop PremiumCoat Roof System is a roof coating system designed for use on existing flat roofs. It works with structural concrete, single ply, built-up roofing (BUR) and metal roofs. Once installed, the HydroStop PremiumCoat Roof System creates a weatherproof seal, and improves roof reflectivity and wind resistance. While it can also be installed to bolster newly-installed roofs, make sure it doesn’t conflict with warranty and/or insurance coverage terms.

Installation Process

Commercial roof coatings like the HydroStop PremiumCoat Roof System require a roofing surface that’s thoroughly cleaned and dried. Structural repairs will need to be performed before application. If the existing roof is beyond its expected service life, it has to be assessed by a GAF certified contractor to determine if the HydroStop PremiumCoat Roof System is suitable for installation. An adhesion test will also be performed to determine the most suitable type of primer.

As seen in the video, HydroStop PremiumCoat Roof System is installed in three stages:

  1. Primer — A layer of primer is applied to the prepared roofing surface. This creates a surface that the other layers will adhere to. GAF’s primer is colored green to ensure no spots are missed.

  2. HydroStop Foundation and Fabric — This replaces typical metal flashing and rubber boots. HydroStop Foundation will be applied to areas such as joints, penetrations, and transitions. Reinforcing fabric is cut and incorporated into Hydrostop Foundation and then allowed to thoroughly dry. It’s colored a different shade of green for visual identification.

  3. HydroStop Finish — This finishing layer can be applied using a paint sprayer or a brush roller. Unlike the primer and foundation layers, HydroStop Finish is colored white to allow the installer to identify missed spots. It also makes the outer roofing layer more reflective, which helps reduce the heat absorbed through the roof. The finished roof will undergo a final quality inspection before it is complete.
